The Berliner Philharmoniker has been performing works by Mahler ever since the composer conducted them himself, yet Claudio Abbado was the first Chief Conductor of the orchestra to work with them on almost all of Mahler's works, and he brings all his experience and expertise to this concert commemorating the centenary of the Mahler's death in 2011. On the programme at the Berlin Philharmonie are Mahler's penultimate completed work, Das Lied von der Erde, and the Adagio from the unfinished 10th Symphony. Both evoke a mood of farewell and yet look forward towards the modernist music that would soon follow. As soloists in Das Lied von der Erde, Jonas Kaufmann and Anne Sofie von Otter make for a Mahlerian dream team.
