In this, her first performance to be captured on film, Cecilia Bartoli sparkles as Rosina in Michael Hampe's intelligent production of Rossini's evergreen comedy. The Italian mezzo – at the threshold of international stardom – brings irresistible charisma and wit to Rossini's wily heroine, who, with the help of the local barber and factotum, Figaro (Gino Quilico), foils her gullible guardian, Doctor Bartolo (Carlos Feller), to end up in the arms of the dashing Count Almaviva (David Kuebler). With a scintillating score, conducted here by Gabriele Ferro, this fast-paced comedy was a hit right from its incident-filled premiere in 1816 and remains a favourite to this day.
