Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and Gabriela Montero: Tchaikovsky & Weinberg

“An exploration for a whole lifetime” is how Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla describes the music of Mieczysław Weinberg, and few living conductors are more passionate champions of this powerfully original contemporary of Shostakovich. Certainly, his Third Symphony of 1949 can rarely have received a more expressive performance than in this 2023 concert with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. But for Gražinytė-Tyla, every concert is personal. She pairs Weinberg’s symphony with a contemporary classic by her Lithuanian compatriot Raminta Šerkšnytė, and joins an artistic kindred spirit, the irrepressible Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero, in a life-affirming performance of Tchaikovsky’s evergreen First Piano Concerto.
