Ulster Orchestra, Thierry Fischer

Duration58 Min

Jean Françaix was born in Le Mans in 1912, where his father was the director of the conservatory.[2][3] At the young age of nine, he published his first piano composition and later studied with Nadia Boulanger at the Paris Conservatory.[2] David Drew emphasized the profound impact of her training. In his works, which encompass numerous genres from chamber music and ballets to operas and oratorios, Françaix combined precision with modesty, always demonstrating remarkable clarity and a pointed style.[2][4]

In 1930, he was awarded first prize for piano at the Paris Conservatory. At just 22, he performed as a soloist at the Lamoureux Concert in Paris with his own Concertino for Piano and Orchestra – a typical example of his elegant, lighthearted compositional style.[2] The works presented on this CD, with their clear structures and economical means, reflect his remarkable precision.

In 1930, he was awarded first prize for piano at the Paris Conservatory. The ballet "Les malheurs de Sophie" is based on the well-known children's book about Sophie, Countess de Ségur. Françaix set the story of the lively girl to music, emphasizing childlike imagination. The composition is divided into three parts and conveys a lighthearted, cheerful atmosphere with gentle moments.

"Les bosquets de Cythère," a waltz suite from 1946, also draws on the French musical tradition and plays ironically with the motif of the island of Cythera. The suite impresses with its subtle musical arrangement and sparkling irony.

Françaix masterfully combined traditional elements with a modern musical language, making his characteristic compositional skill audible in every detail.[4]
