Album insights

Following the breakout success of Symphony No. 10 last year, described as "scandalously successful" by the Sunday Times, Shostakovich's Symphonies No. 5, 8, and 9 are now set to be released. These masterpieces are performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Andris Nelsons. Alongside his role as the Music Director of the Boston Orchestra, the Latvian conductor was appointed as the 21st Kapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig last autumn. Starting in the 2017/18 season, he will lead one of Germany's most esteemed orchestras. Andris Nelsons is renowned globally for his innovative approach and is considered a leading figure in the music scene. Being one of the few conductors from his generation who grew up in a Soviet-influenced musical environment, he shares a deep connection with Shostakovich due to his personal background. The plan includes recording a complete Shostakovich cycle in collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon.
