The 400th death anniversary of Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548–1611) on August 27, 2011 provides a great opportunity to delve into the life and works of this composer, about whom we know surprisingly little. Victoria is recognized as one of Spain's most significant composers, alongside Palestrina and Lassus, during his era. Known for his sacred vocal compositions for liturgical church music, he created renowned pieces such as the Officium Sanctae Hebdomadae, a collection of devotional songs for Holy Week. Presented for the first time is a 10-CD box set featuring Victoria's key works, previously only available through individual releases in Spain. These works, performed by the esteemed English ensemble "Plus Ultra" under Michael Noone, primarily originate from the composer's prolific Madrid period (1586–1611). This collection represents the most extensive available compilation of Victoria's music, including over 90 pieces across 10 CDs. Among these are three previously unreleased masses, six Magnificat settings, and several famous motets and masses from the repertoire of Tomás Luis de Victoria.
