Andris Nelsons Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons continues the Grammy Award-winning Shostakovich symphonies with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
The recordings include the Russian composer's Fourth and Eleventh Symphonies. The Fourth Symphony, composed in 1936, was not premiered until 1961—eight years after Stalin's death. Shostakovich was deeply concerned about the potential repercussions for his works, which were considered "un-Soviet." This new recording is closely linked to the dramatic and impressive world premiere, in which BSO violinist Vyacheslav Uritsky participated in Moscow.
