Album insights

Silfra embodies an impressive collaboration that organically developed over more than two years. American violinist Hilary Hahn and German pianist Hauschka embarked on a record centered around the process of research and experimentation. Their shared curiosity and mutual admiration for each other's work served as the primary driving force for this endeavor. The music found on Silfra is completely improvised, coming to life during the recording sessions at the esteemed Greenhouse Studio in Reykjavik, Iceland. Overseeing the production of the record is Valgeir Sigurdsson, an Icelandic producer and label executive. The title "Silfra" draws inspiration from a unique Icelandic natural phenomenon—the Silfra rift—a seabed trench situated beneath Iceland at the juncture of the North American and Eurasian continental plates.
