Concert Hall

The plans for a large festival theatre on the site of the former archiepiscopal stables can be traced back primarily to the architect Clemens Holzmeister; alongside him, Herbert von Karajan also contributed suggestions to the building project, especially regarding the conception of the theatre hall. Neither cost nor effort was spared to insert between the three-century-old façade of the Hofmarstall and the Mönchsberg a theatre house with an opera stage whose layout and technical equipment still meet the highest international standards after 50 years: Between the autumn of 1956 and the early summer of 1960, 55,000 cubic meters of rock were blasted to create the appropriate space for this purpose.
