Evgeny Kissin's recitals at the Verbier Festival are always special occasions and 2025 will be no different as he presents a programme juxtaposing favourite works by Bach and Chopin against music by Dmitri Shostakovich, 50 years after his death. The concert begins with Bach's celebrated Partita No. 2 in C minor – a large-scale suite of movements exploring every facet of the Baroque keyboard player's art. Chopin is represented by two nocturnes and the mercurial Scherzo No. 4 before the programme concludes with the Shostakovich: his Piano Sonata No. 2, in which a fleet-footed first movement and mournful Largo proceed the tautly argued theme-and-variations finale, is followed by two Preludes and Fugues from the composer's remarkable set of 24.
