Karajan conducts the New Year's Eve Concert 1988 – with Evgeny Kissin

One great artist at the end of his career joins forces with another at the start of his: filmed a little over six months before his death in July 1989, this New Year’s Eve concert was one of the last that Herbert von Karajan conducted, and, as the soloist in Tchaikovsky’s evergreen Piano Concerto No. 1, he invited the 17-year-old Evgeny Kissin. Together – and with the luxurious support of the Berliner Philharmoniker – they present an account of this favourite work which mixes virtuosity and passion with a rare sense of grandeur and control, in a performance that has gone down in classical music legend. And with Karajan in lighter mood in Prokofiev’s playful “Classical” Symphony to kick off, the result was a memorable occasion indeed.
