Waldbühne 2017: Legends of the Rhine

Gustavo Dudamel returns to the Waldbühne in his third performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker for their annual concert to mark the end of the season. Making up the 2017 programme are the works of Schumann and Wagner, who knew and respected one another and were almost the same age yet were long regarded as representatives of opposing styles. The result of the lively Rhenish Symphony being followed by orchestral excerpts from Wagner’s Ring Cycle makes this concert all the more alluring. Combining the two makes sense, however, when considering that the four operas take place partly in the same landscape and close to the same river that inspired Schumann to write his Third Symphony.
