Rimsky Korsakov's The Tsar's Bride is an historical epic with a very modern message; a drama of love, politics and betrayal that drives to the very heart of what it means to be Russian and – more importantly – to be human. This 2013 production from Berlin united the powerhouse team of Daniel Barenboim and director Dmitri Tcherniakov, relocating Rimsky's tsars and lovers to a chillingly modern surveillance state. In this startlingly prescient re-interpretation of Rimsky's underrated masterpiece, Olga Peretyatko delivers a powerful central performance as a woman caught between love and the power of technological totalitarianism.
