"Astonishing" was how one critic described director Dmitri Tcherniakov's re-invention of Bizet's Carmen at the 2017 Aix-en-Provence Festival – another declared that it "will change the way you see Bizet's masterpiece". Tcherniakov rewrites the famous tragedy as a play-within-a-play; using the familiar themes and characters of the opera to illuminate a very modern (and unsettlingly recognisable) dissection of contemporary values and relationships: Carmen meets the all-too-modern world of The White Lotus. And as always at Aix, musical values are world-class, with Stéphanie d'Oustrac as Carmen, Michael Fabiano as José and Pablo Heras-Casado conducting the Orchestre de Paris.
