Der fliegende Holländer is Wagner’s shortest opera, but it’s also the first in which he explored the full power of his musical and dramatic vision – and in this bold staging, it’s never sounded more forceful or fresh. Conductor Marc Minkowski and the period-instrument Musiciens de Louvre return to Wagner’s original single-act version of the score, relocating this tale of a phantom ship and its tormented captain to Scotland rather than Norway, and revealing the composer’s youthful imagination at its most concentrated. Director Olivier Py’s penetrating production, and a cast of leading Wagnerians, set the seal on a gripping operatic experience.
