“Atys is slaying the one he loves!” Lully’s mythological opera Atys is an allegory, designed to celebrate the splendours of Louis XIV’s court, but at its heart is a story of doomed love and a hero cursed by the gods. When baroque specialist William Christie and director Jean-Marie Villégier created their staging of Atys in 1987, the results caused a sensation – a near-perfect blend of historic spectacle and heartfelt period performance that revolutionised Lully’s modern reputation. This Paris performance from 2011 revives that ground-breaking production in all its beauty and emotion; as miraculous to hear as it is to see.
