Waltzes, young love, and the bittersweet sensation of time slipping through your fingers: Richard Jones's Glyndebourne production of Der Rosenkavalier might dispense with the surface trappings of Strauss and Hofmannsthal's fairy tale of 18th-century Vienna, but the essentials are all present – heightened and made even more real by Jones's colourful postwar updating. Controversial at first, Jones's staging has quickly become a classic and this performance from 2014 captures it in all its freshness, with Tara Erraught as a touching Octavian and Kate Royal as a young and wonderfully believable Marschallin. Robin Ticciati draws lustrous colours from the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
