When Carl Maria von Weber – the supreme master of early Romantic German opera – stepped into the imaginative world of Shakespeare, the results were always going to be extraordinary, and Weber's final opera Oberon is certainly that. Part pantomime, part homage to Shakespeare and part oriental fantasy, its ravishing music demands a staging that's as imaginative as Weber's own enchanted sound world – and this 2017 reinvention by director Nikolaus Habjan is alive with visual wonder. Julian Prégardien sings the role of the King of the Fairies, while Ivor Bolton brings all his insight and flair to a truly magical score.
