No horizons are wide enough to counteract the claustrophobic atmosphere on board the Royal Navy ship at the centre of one of Benjamin Britten's most intensely gripping operas. Emotions run high, threatening the breakdown of this floating community. Commissioned for the Festival of Britain in 1951, the opera is staged here by Deborah Warner to mark the bicentenary of Madrid's Teatro Real – in a visually arresting production that has already become a modern classic. Britten specialist Ivor Bolton conducts a largely Anglophone cast led by baritone Jacques Imbrailo in the title role, alongside tenor Toby Spence (Vere, the role created by Britten's partner Peter Pears) and bass Brindley Sherratt (Claggart).
