Claudio Abbado had been intimately familiar with the music of Gustav Mahler since he was a student, and it represented a focal point in his work at the helm of the Berlin Philharmonic. After leaving Berlin, he founded the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, some of whose members had already worked with the conductor for decades. In Lucerne, Abbado once again engaged intensively with Mahler. Here we hear, in a performance filmed in 2006, the composer's shatteringly intense Sixth Symphony, whose apocalyptic atmosphere, which lifts only temporarily in the tender slow movement, is underlined by the famous hammer blows of the finale.
