Spanish is Daniel Barenboim's mother tongue, and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which he founded with Edward Said in 1999, has long been headquartered in Seville. No wonder the music from and depicting Spain sounds so authentic when interpreted by this conductor and his magnificent young musicians. The programme includes Spain-inspired works by Debussy and Ravel, who were great admirers of the music of Manuel de Falla – the only Spaniard on this Salzburg Festival programme. His evocative Nights from Spanish Gardens is too seldom heard, but here receives superb advocacy from pianist Lang Lang.
