Balmorhea: The Wind
Live in Marfa
The stark-yet-vibrant environment of the Chinati Arena in the vast West Texas landscape is the backdrop for this transportive live performance of The Wind, Balmorhea’s first record for the historic Deutsche Grammophon label. Through twelve chapters the group invites viewers to experience this music as embodied in this one of a kind location, unfolding from morning light to evening dusk. Acquired by the artist Donald Judd in the 1980s and remodelled from its former life as an army base gymnasium, the Arena – with its metallic creaks and shudders – becomes an instrument of its own in the recording. This subtle and moving document illuminates the importance of place in musical performance.
