Started in 2021, John Eliot Gardiner's Brahms cycle with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra sees the distinguished conductor join forces with one of the world's most tradition-steeped orchestras to present the four symphonies alongside choral works, as well as the composer's two piano concertos. This final concert, filmed live in Amsterdam's famous Concertgebouw, features the Second Piano Concerto, with British pianist Stephen Hough as soloist, and the Fourth Symphony. While the concerto shows Brahms at his most expansive and relaxed – its beautiful slow movement featuring a poignant cello solo – his last symphony achieves a depth of expression that verges on the tragic, especially in the grandly imposing passacaglia of the finale.
