Haunted Landscapes – Quasthoff & Barenboim perform

Schubert's Winterreise

Production Date: 22/03/2005
83 Min

Schubert wrote over 600 works in his 31 years, but shortly before his death, the Winterreise song cycle, based on Wilhelm Müller's 24 poems, came to be one of his most important. Portraying the journey of a lonely traveler in winter, the songs depict scenes of a cold and dark landscape, a haunted soul, and the state of human loneliness, wholly captured in Grammy Award-winning bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff's performance. Accompanied by Daniel Barenboim on piano, the two stars interpret the work just as Schubert would have wanted it: without any exaggerated displays of emotion, allowing the music itself to strike the sentimental chord that aims straight at the core.
