A keyboard giant performs music by two of the composers that meant the most to him: Emil Gilels presents a recital filmed in the Stiftskirche Ossiach as part of the Carintihischer Sommer Festival in August 1971. On the programme: Mozart's powerful Sonata in A Minor, K. 310, alongside his variations on "Salve tu, Domine" and the remarkable Fantasie in D Minor, followed by two Beethoven sonatas, the brilliant "Waldstein" and the visionary late Sonata in A Major, Op. 101. Two encores – by Mendelssohn and Schumann – complete a programme that offers a compelling glimpse of Gilels at the height of his powers.
