In the 1980s, the Munich Klaviersommer festival had a knack of finding the world's most interesting and adventurous pianists and getting them to exceed expectations. In this filmed recital from 1983, recorded live at the Kongressaal, performances of Bach and Scriabin from the Serbian pianist Marina Milic form a counterpoint to a typically imaginative programme from the duo of Roland Batik and Paul Gulda – livewires of the 1980s Austrian piano scene. Batik plays one of his own improvisations before the pair come together in a flamboyant duet account of Ravel's dizzying portrait of a world on the brink, La Valse.
