When a keyboard work is as vast and as unbounded in its imaginative possibilities as Bach's Goldberg Variations, there's no reason why it should be restricted to a single performer. And when the interpreters concerned are artists of the calibre of violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky, viola player Gérard Caussé and cellist Mischa Maisky, the results (and the insights) speak for themselves. Sitkovetsky's own string trio arrangement (created to mark Bach's 300th anniversary and dedicated to Glenn Gould) has become a classic alternative approach to the Goldbergs. It's captured here, live in Munich, at one of its very first public performances.
