Andris Nelsons

Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons, together with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and pianist Yuja Wang, has recorded a breathtaking interpretation of Messiaen's 'Turangalîla Symphony'. The recording took place in April 2024 at Boston's Symphony Hall and commemorates the 75th anniversary of the world premiere on December 2, 1949. Remarkably, the Boston Symphony Orchestra itself premiered the work at that time. The visionary music director Serge Koussevitsky commissioned the composition and granted Messiaen complete artistic freedom: 'Choose as many instruments as you like, write a work as long as you like.' The result is a 10-movement piece for large orchestra with piano and the Ondes Martenot, an early electronic instrument. While the digital release has already been made, a physical version is planned for 2025.
