While the works of Henri Vieuxtemps enjoyed greater popularity than those of Wolfgang Mozart in the 19th century, Mozart's reputation was nonetheless secure, though based on a limited repertoire. It wasn't until the beginning of the 20th century that numerous important compositions by Mozart were recognized as true masterpieces. At the same time, Vieuxtemps's name increasingly disappeared from orchestral programs, although his music continues to be highly regarded among violinists. Vieuxtemps's style is strongly influenced by the Classical period in Paris and Vienna and clearly bears the imprint of Beethoven. Violinist Hilary Hahn considers both Vieuxtemps's fourth and Mozart's fifth violin concertos central works to her program, as they embody the rich heritage of classical music and create space on stage for timeless musical dialogues.
