Andris Nelsons Andris Nelsons, a world-renowned conductor, will assume the position of Gewandhaus Kapellmeister in 2018, thus significantly shaping the musical life of Leipzig. His collaboration with the Gewandhaus Orchestra is already considered a great success.
As part of his tenure, Deutsche Grammophon will release a new series of Bruckner symphonies, recorded by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Nelsons' direction. The series opens with Bruckner's Third Symphony, complemented by the Tannhäuser Overture by Richard Wagner, which was dedicated to Bruckner. According to Nelsons, these works reflect existential questions and doubts that resonate with both Bruckner and the people of our time. He particularly emphasizes Bruckner's faith and inner strength, which are reflected in his music. The juxtaposition of Bruckner's works with those of Wagner is also a tribute to the city of Leipzig. The Gewandhaus Orchestra, which celebrated its 275th anniversary with Nelsons's appointment during the 2017/18 season, has maintained close ties with both composers: Bruckner's Seventh Symphony premiered there, and Wagner, who was from Leipzig, presented many of his works in the context of the cosmopolitan orchestra. Nelsons is exclusively under contract with Deutsche Grammophon and has already won two Grammy Awards.
