Frédéric Chopin's Nocturnes Frédéric Chopin's Nocturnes are considered outstanding miniature works for piano.
Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki has now released a complete recording of these 21 pieces, composed between 1827 and 1846. The very first Nocturne, Opus 9 No. 1 in B-flat minor, opened up a vast palette of emotions, musical gestures, and timbres for Lisiecki. This early encounter led the brilliant young artist to explore the lyrical dimension of piano playing. His highly acclaimed collaboration with Matthias Goerne on Beethoven songs last year—combined with his well-known affinity for Chopin—has undoubtedly shaped his new interpretation of these soulful, confessional Nocturnes. Lisiecki considers these remarkable compositions to be works for intimate listening, best contemplated at night in solitude. "These extraordinary pieces invite you to think and feel whatever you wish," the pianist concludes. "There is no 'right' reaction to this, except the one you feel right now."
