Gustavo Dudamel
Gustavo Dudamel was born in 1981 in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, and grew up listening to music and “conducting” his toys to old recordings. As a child, he received violin lessons, but he was drawn to conducting from an early age. At the age of 13, he put down his violin during a youth orchestra rehearsal and picked up the baton when the conductor arrived late. A natural talent, he began conducting studies with Rodolfo Saglimbeni and was appointed music director of the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra in 1996, where his abilities were discovered by José Antonio Abreu, who would become his mentor. In 1999, at the age of 18, he became the music director of the Simón Bolívar Youth Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. Dudamel gained international attention when he won the first Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition organized by the Bamberg Symphony in 2004, and in 2005 made his U.S. debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. He was subsequently named music director of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, where he now holds the title of honorary conductor. In 2009, the Los Angeles Philharmonic appointed the 27-year-old Dudamel as its music director. Under his leadership, the LA Phil has established itself as one of the world’s leading orchestras, expanding its reach into the community, pushing boundaries, and bringing new sounds, voices, and faces into the concert hall. Inspired by El Sistema, Dudamel, the LA Phil, and community partners founded YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles). What began as a music program for 80 students in South Los Angeles now serves more than 1,300 young musicians at four locations, providing free instruments, intensive music instruction, academic support, and leadership training. Dudamel’s talent has been widely recognized, and he is regarded as one of the most awarded conductors of his generation. He continues to exert influence as a musical leader and mentor to young musicians. The Gustavo Dudamel Foundation, a registered charity, was founded with the mission to expand access to music and the arts by providing young people with instruments and opportunities to shape their creative futures.
