Power corrupts; but lust can corrupt absolutely. The bloody story of the Emperor Nero's palace intrigues and the unstoppable rise of his mistress Poppea is a cautionary tale told with a dangerously seductive smile. Monteverdi's final completed opera is also his most sensuous, and nearly four centuries on, it's lost none of its power – or beauty. In this concert staging, created for La Fenice in Venice to celebrate the composer's 450th birthday in 2017, a truly world-class cast joins the Monteverdi Choir and Sir John Eliot Gardiner – possibly the most distinguished (and celebrated) Monteverdi interpreter of modern times.
