An exile returns, usurpers are vanquished, and after decades of longing and separation, a husband and wife are reunited at last. Monteverdi's Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria takes its story from Homer's Odyssey, but its themes are as eternal and enduring as humanity itself. Often imitated, but never surpassed, Monteverdi's pioneering opera resounds down the centuries, and this powerful concert performance – staged at La Fenice, Venice, in the composer's 450th-anniversary year – assembles some of the 21st century's finest Monteverdi interpreters under the direction of one of his supreme living champions, Sir John Eliot Gardiner.
