John Schlesinger's 1980 production of Les Contes d'Hoffmann acquired classic status at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden – bringing a cinematic ambition and sweep to the teeming, fantastic world of Offenbach's final masterpiece. This 2016 production marked its retirement from the repertoire, but with Vittorio Grigolo as the luckless poet, and Thomas Hampson as his many-faced arch-enemy, it went out in magnificent style – with the stellar trio of Sonya Yoncheva, Sofia Fomina and Christine Rice adding a jewel-like sparkle as the three objects of his passion. Old-school Romantic opera at its most sumptuous, and its most moving.
