Director Krzysztof Warlikowski takes us deep into the dark heart of Verdi's thrilling early Shakespearian masterpiece in a staging that probes deep into the psychology of Macbeth and his wife – and the reasons for their unquenchable thirst for power. Bringing this compelling vision to life is a superb cast, featuring Vladislav Sulimsky as an implacable Macbeth, the compelling Asmik Grigorian as Lady Macbeth. As Macduff, meanwhile, the tenor Jonathan Tetelman represents the sort of starry casting for which the Salzburg Festival is famous. With Philippe Jordan conducting a Wiener Philharmoniker on fiery form, the result is Verdian drama at its most powerful and probing.
