Part fin-de-siècle fairy tale, part symbolist drama of love, destiny and the power of art, Franz Schreker's opera Der Schatzgräber was the greatest success of his career – playing to packed houses in the years after its premiere in Frankfurt in 1920. And who better to revive it than Christof Loy, a director celebrated for his very personal approach late-romantic allegory? His 2022 production for the Deutsche Oper Berlin updates the opera to a stunningly imagined art-deco world; peeling away the psychological layers to drive to the dark heart of Schreker's music drama. Elisabet Strid and Daniel Johansson head an exemplary cast.
