Murder and revenge and the unbearable painfulness of existence: Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet is one of his most powerful and most popular plays. Its title character's question "To be or not to be" remains one of the most famous lines in Western culture. The Australian composer Brett Dean's 2017 score to a libretto by Matthew Jocelyn belongs in a long tradition of Hamlet adaptations yet transformed Shakespeare's play into an opera like no other: witty, bleak and deeply human. Featuring a starry Anglophone cast led by Allan Clayton (Hamlet), Barbara Hannigan (Ophelia) and Sarah Connolly (Gertrude), with Vladimir Jurowski conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra, this world premiere production was a hit with audiences and critics alike.
