Nineteenth-century Madrid: and as the flames of civil war sweep across Spain, the dark-eyed beauty Luisa Fernanda finds her heart as torn as her loyalties. Premiered in 1932, Federico Torroba's epic zarzuela is arguably Spain's national opera, and a classic of the repertoire at Madrid's Teatro Real, where this lavish performance was filmed in 2006. Jesus Lopez Cobos conducts a cast steeped in zarzuela tradition and, with Plácido Domingo singing the role of the lovelorn royalist Vidal, it's hard to imagine a better introduction to a masterpiece that is still far too little known outside of Spain.
