Rachmaninoff composed his First Piano Concerto while still in his teens, and it shows the young composer-pianist at his most ambitious, audacious and brilliantly virtuosic. Although he later revised the work, it remains one of his most vivid youthful creations. Few pianists are better suited to its demands than Yuja Wang, performing it here as part of her Rachmaninoff cycle with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under her longtime friend and collaborator Gustavo Dudamel. “A glittering pianistic masterclass in high-speed touch,” wrote BBC Music Magazine, “alternating between virtuosic shimmering and emotive depth.” A thrilling opening chapter in Wang’s exploration of Rachmaninoff’s complete works for piano and orchestra.
