Rachmaninoff’s Fourth Piano Concerto remains a rarity among his works. The first major score he composed after leaving Russia in 1917, it inhabits a very different world from the earlier concertos: more exploratory, more elusive and less eager to wear its heart on its sleeve. Long misunderstood by audiences – and repeatedly revised by its composer – it remains one of the most fascinating corners of Rachmaninoff’s output. For Yuja Wang, who described it as her favourite of the four concertos at the time of recording, that is precisely its appeal, and she embraces its challenges with evident conviction in this performance from her acclaimed Rachmaninoff cycle with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
