Rachmaninoff’s Fourth Piano Concerto remains a rarity among his works. The first major score he composed after leaving Russia in 1917, it inhabits a very different world from the earlier concertos: more exploratory, more elusive and less eager to wear its heart on its sleeve. Long misunderstood by audiences – and repeatedly revised by its composer – it remains one of the most fascinating corners of Rachmaninoff’s output.
