Herbert von Karajan leads a superb line-up of soloists and the forces of La Scala, Milan in Verdi's monumental Requiem. Marking the 10th anniversary of Arturo Toscanini's death and filmed in the empty auditorium of Milan's legendary opera house over two days in January 1967, the performance features arguably the finest solo quartet ever to be recorded, with a young Luciano Pavarotti (a late stand-in for tenor Carlo Bergonzi) alongside soprano Leontyne Price, mezzo-soprano Fiorenza Cossotto and bass Nicolai Ghiaurov. The fifth and final collaboration between Karajan and the French film director Henri-Georges Clouzot, the film showcases not only a superb musical performance but also an innovative approach to capturing music on film.
