Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä is on the podium of the Philharmonie de Paris in a programme juxtaposing Tchaikovsky's heart-rending final symphony – completed just a few months before his death in 1893 – and Magnus Lindberg's brilliant new Piano Concerto No.3, featuring Yuja Wang as soloist. With Sibelius's Valse Triste as an opener and two encores included for good measure – one by Sibelius, another by his fellow Finn Heino Kaski – this proved to be an unmissable occasion.
