Herbert von Karajan's Missa Solemnis at the Easter Festival
Salzburg 1979
Performance date: 14/04/1979

In Herbert von Karajan's vast repertoire, the music of Ludwig van Beethoven was central in a very special way. Karajan recorded the complete cycle of Beethoven's symphonies with the Berliner Philharmoniker no less than three times. He also repeatedly included the Missa solemnis, Beethoven's most important sacred composition, in the programme. This was also the case at the 1979 Salzburg Easter Festival, when the Vienna Singverein, the conductor's favorite choir, was available. The quartet of soloists is led by the Bulgarian soprano Anna Tomowa-Sintow, who also appeared in leading roles in Herbert von Karajan's late productions of Mozart's Don Giovanni and Strauss' Rosenkavalier.
