Suor Angelica is the passionate, wounded heart of the trio of one-act operatic morality tales that Puccini called Il Trittico. This convent-set story of a young woman deprived of family, child and all hope of redemption inspired the composer to some of his most heartfelt music; an experience that leaves few viewers unmoved. But in this imaginative new updating, created by the director Denis Krief for Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in 2020, the stakes are still higher. Maria José Siri plays Puccini's heartbroken heroine with luminous vocal beauty and an unrivalled emotional honesty, at the head of a deservedly acclaimed all-female cast.
