Album insights
Víkingur Ólafsson's most personal album to date, "From Afar," draws inspiration from childhood memories and a musical hero. In an unconventional move, the Icelandic pianist recorded the repertoire on both a Steinway and a piano. This project took shape in September 2021 when Ólafsson encountered one of his favorite composers, György Kurtág, known as the "Master of Few Notes." Their meeting echoes in the title of the new recording, "From Afar." Struggling to express gratitude to Kurtág verbally, Ólafsson opted to convey his feelings through music. Described as a "letter to a friend" by the pianist, "From Afar" combines original miniatures and transcriptions by the Hungarian composer. Interwoven with Icelandic and Hungarian folk songs, as well as pieces by Schumann, Brahms, and Thomas Adès, the music reflects significant influences in the pianist's life. By utilizing both instruments, Ólafsson blends two sonic realms, creating a tapestry of rich colors and atmospheres. Explore the complete booklet for more insights.
