In 2023, the Bayerisches Staatsorchester celebrated its 500th anniversary, making it one of the oldest and most traditional ensembles in the world. Based at the Bayerische Staatsoper, the orchestra—with its 144 members—performs both in the opera pit and on the concert stage.
In 2025, the orchestra was named “Orchestra of the Year” for the eleventh consecutive time and for the thirteenth time overall by the critics' survey of Opernwelt magazine. In 2022, the orchestra also received prestigious recognition at the Gramophone Awards in London for recordings released under the Bayerische Staatsoper Recordings label. These included Die tote Stadt, The Snow Queen, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 7—an unprecedented achievement in the history of the Gramophone Awards. In 2024, the DVD/Blu-ray of Die Fledermaus also received this honor.
