Kleiber conducts Beethoven, Mozart & Brahms

Carlos Kleiber famously joked that he only conducted when he needed to eat. In truth, of course, his relatively rare live performances were so lucid, so energetic and so instinctively, thrillingly musical that every one became a major event. This live concert from 1996 finds him in the Herkulessaal, Munich with one of his favourite orchestras, directing repertoire – by Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms - in which he had no equal by this stage of his career. The music is familiar, but Kleiber's rapport with his musicians, as well as the tonal beauty and life-affirming spontaneity of his interpretations, place these performances In the "unmissable" class.
