Jonathan Sells directs the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists in this programme from the Edinburgh International Festival showcasing music that these ensembles have made their own in the over 60 years since their foundation. The concert begins with Purcell – the beautiful "Hear my Prayer" and the deeply moving Funeral Sentences – and progresses, via a selection of superb Motets by Johann Sebastian Bach and a lament by his cousin Johann Christoph, to one of the most brilliant jewels in the Baroque choral repertoire: Handel's Dixit Dominus, composed in Italy in 1707, and a work that shows the young composer revelling in the musical possibilities opened to him by his irrepressible talent.
