Filmed at Opernhaus Zürich, Joana Mallwitz conducts a highly anticipated new staging of Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal's bittersweet – and deeply moving – comedy Der Rosenkavalier. Lydia Steier, celebrated for her intelligent, questing productions, directs a superb cast. Diana Damrau (appearing by courtesy of Warner Classics) sings the Marschallin, who ultimately learns to renounce her own feelings to let the budding romance between Sophie (Emily Pogorelc) and Octavian (Angela Brower) take its course – once, that is, the boisterous, arrogant Baron Ochs (Günther Groissböck) has been taught a lesson.
